Before we allow counselors to connect with students, The Social U must verify your position and role. The Social U team personally verifies each counselor that registers in the system individually.

Once we have determined your status as a counselor, begin connecting with your students to generate reports.

The Social U provides verified educators and counselors with their own unique and customized dashboard. Counselors have the ability to connect one-on-one with their students individually to guide them through the process of cleaning up their social media profiles and online reputation. Reviewing your students’ grades allows for greater insight into the world of social media and the impact it will have in the near future, especially pertaining to college admissions and employment opportunities.

Counselors are only capable of viewing “top-level” grades and overall “social media GPA” scores of students who have actively participated and connected their social media accounts with the counselors themselves. Counselors do not have the ability to view in-depth reports of scanned social media profiles of students (including flagged posts or specific updates that may trigger a higher risk). This information is only available to students and parents who are connected with the counselor and The Social U system themselves.

Report generation times may vary depending on the amount of content we have to scan with connected social media accounts.

If it has been more than 24 hours and you have not yet received an email notification indication your report is ready to view, click here to contact us.

Registered counselors are only capable of viewing “top-level” content of students’ profiles.

What does this mean?

When a counselor logs in to review a student’s account, they are only able to view the student’s social media GPA and top-level social media site grades. Counselors do not have access to view individual posts and flagged content within the student’s social media profiles.

After you have been verified as a counselor by The Social U, discounts will be automatically applied to your account when purchasing a report.

Once you connect your social media accounts, The Social U gives you your Social GPA for free.  If you want to see the details behind the score, we offer three options.  Each option allows you to run unlimited reports during the subscription time period  you choose: 3 days ($9.95), 1 month ($19.99) or 1 year ($149.99).

The purpose of allowing a college counselor to view your student’s Social GPA is to help them ensure that what they post online isn’t going to prevent them from getting into the college of their choice by allowing counselors to advise and remind students that social media can affect admissions decisions.

If your child signed up for The Social U through school/a college counselor, the college counselor  will have access to your student’s Social GPA and social media site letter grades if the student chooses to allow them access.  They will NOT see any posts or any other detailed information (unless the student shares it with them).

The Social U has no way to guarantee improved chances of college acceptance rates. However, with the use of The Social U it is possible to streamline the process of eliminating negative uploads, photos, and posts to ensure your child’s future online reputation is protected at all times. With more college admissions professionals than ever reviewing social media profiles today before accepting students, The Social U helps you present the best you online.

  • Ask any parent of a teenager whether their child has ever posted anything questionable on social media, and you’ll get a “yes”.
  • We give students and their families the tools, insights and expertise to polish their social media profiles to create the digital reputation they need to get the opportunities they want.
  • It used to be that you couldn’t judge a book by its cover. Now – it’s you can’t judge a person by their online profile. It’s easy to Google anyone and anything – teens are being judged with potentially lifelong consequences as a result.

The Social U scans public posts that are either public or viewable to any approved “friends” or “followers” on each of the social media sites you connect.  We do NOT have access to private posts or messages between users on any site.

Much like a traditional high school report card, The Social U determines your Report Card’s overall Social GPA based on the grades you receive for each individual social network we scan. Our grading scale is as follows:

grading scale

The Social U Report Card gives you complete visibility into your digital lifestream – the words, images, tags and sentiments that define your online character across all social networks.

The Social U’s system scans your public social media accounts for potentially offensive words, phrases and photos that may have a negative impact on your future. Each post is given a score based on its content and how offensive it may be to others. A grade is then generated for each individual social network you have connected with your account using a grading system similar to high school report cards. When combined, your grades for all networks scanned help to create your final Social GPA and report card.

On your Social U Report Card, for each social network you’ve added or connected to us, you will see a percentage score under each network grade that highlights our first impression of you.  This percentage is based solely on posts we tag that appear on the first page of your profile on that network. Our goal is to let you know what kind of first impression you’ll make on others who give your profile a quick glance without going through it in depth.

The higher your first impression percentage, the better. In other words, a 100% score indicates you’ll make a great first impression on others.  It is possible to have a high overall grade and low first impression score depending on where your problematic posts appear in your posting history.

On your Social U Report Card, for each social network you’ve added or connected to us, you will see a percentage score under each network grade for your risk exposure.  This percentage takes into account posts made on that network over the last two years and weighs them based on their individual score as well as how likely it is that others will see those posts that might cause them to view you in a negative fashion.

The goal for risk exposure is to have 0% risk.  The higher the percentage, the more risky it is not to edit or delete posts we have tagged as potentially problematic.  It is possible to have a high overall grade and high risk exposure depending on where your problematic posts appear in your posting history.

Sex: If you’ve had a post flagged for “Sex” but you’re unsure why, here are some possible reasons:

The Social U’s proprietary algorithm scans your profiles for words and images that may be considered sexual by nature. Nudity, swim suit photos, sexual innuendo, sexual slang and even photos that appear to be sexually provocative are the main focus of this category. However, at times our system may flag a post it believes to be questionable when in fact, it is not. It is also possible that a phrase, word or photo that is often used sexually (as slang or otherwise) was used in a different non-sexual manner in your post and the content was still flagged. This may happen from time to time as our system continues to learn.

Drugs: If you’ve had a post flagged for “Drugs” but you’re unsure why, here are some possible reasons:

The Social U’s proprietary algorithm scans for words and images that may be considered drug-related or illegal. Photos of drugs, paraphernalia and drug slang terms or phrases are the main focus of this category. However, at times our system may detect a post it believes to be questionable when it is not. It is also possible that a phrase, word or photo that is often used to reference drugs or paraphernalia (as slang or otherwise) was used in a different non-questionable manner in your post and the content was still flagged. This may happen from time to time as our system continues to learn.

If you’ve had a post flagged for “Partying” but you’re unsure why, here are some possible reasons:

The Social U’s proprietary algorithm  scans for words and images that may fall within the category of partying which includes  drinking, and can lead to devastating consequences for students . Photos of alcohol, bottles and even red or blue solo cups are the main focus of this category as are images where it appears a party may be happening (which could include photos of groups of students that appear to be having a good time together even if alcohol isn’t in the picture). However, at times our system may detect a post it believes to be questionable  when it is not. It is also possible that a phrase, word or photo that is often used to reference partying or drinking (as slang or otherwise) was used in a different non-questionable manner in your post and the content was still flagged. This may happen from time to time as our system continues to learn.

Extremism: If you’ve had a post flagged for “Extremism” but you’re unsure why, here are some possible reasons:

The Social U’s proprietary algorithm scans for words and images that may be considered extremist in nature. Posts that highlight extremist viewpoints are the main focus of this category. However, at times our system may detect a post it believes to be extremist in nature when it is not. It is also possible that a phrase, word or photo that is often used to reference extremist viewpoints (as slang or otherwise) was used in a different non-extremist manner in your post and the content was still flagged. This may happen from time to time as our system continues to learn.

Hate Speech: If you’ve had a post flagged for “Hate Speech” but you’re unsure why, here are some possible reasons:

The Social U’s proprietary algorithm scans for words and images that may be considered hateful or offensive. Photos of hateful language, words that are commonly known as promoting or signifying hate and slang terms or phrases (that even though you may not be familiar with but are used by some people in an offensive and hateful manner) are the main focus of this category. However, at times our system may detect a post it believes contains hateful or inappropriate language when in fact the language is not hate-inspired. It is also possible that a phrase, word or photo that is often used to reference hateful and offensive language (as slang or otherwise) was used in a different non-hate-inspired manner in your post and the content was still flagged. This may happen from time to time as our system continues to learn.

Behavior: If you’ve had a post flagged for “Behavior” but you’re unsure why, here are some possible reasons:

The Social U’s proprietary algorithm scans for words and images that may be considered hateful or bullying. Posts that highlight bullying or hateful behavior are the main focus of this category along with photos of fights and bullying. However, at times our system may detect a post it believes to be questionable when it is not. It is also possible that a phrase, word or photo that is often used to reference bullying or hateful behavior (as slang or otherwise) was used in a different non-questionable manner in your post and the content was still flagged. This may happen from time to time as our system continues to learn.

Violence: If you’ve had a post flagged for “Violence” but you’re unsure why, here are some possible reasons:

The Social U’s proprietary algorithm scans for words and images that may be considered violent or hateful in nature. Photos of violence, weapons, blood and gore are the main focus of this category. However, at times our system may detect a post it believes to be questionable when it is not. It is also possible that a phrase, word or photo that is often used to reference violence, weapons or gore (as slang or otherwise) was used in a different non-questionable manner in your post and the content was still flagged. This may happen from time to time as our system continues to learn.
